Dutch CEDAW Network
Aim for human rights is an active partner in the Dutch CEDAW Network ('Netwerk VN-Vrouwenverdrag) and also runs the Network’s secretariat. The Network is a cooperation of various Dutch women’s and human rights organisations. It monitors the implementation of CEDAW in the Netherlands and works to ensure that the government takes women’s rights seriously.
Members of the Network
Besides Aim for human rights, various other organisations participate in the core group of the Network: E-Quality, Movisie, St. Emancipatie Online, Studie- en Informatiecentrum Mensenrechten of Utrecht University, Tiye-International, Vereniging voor Vrouw en Recht Clara Wichmann, Justitia et Pax, Vluchtenorganisaties Nederland. In addition, various experts on CEDAW participate. Besides the core group, the Dutch CEDAW Network consists of a wider group of organisations and individuals that work on women’s rights and use CEDAW in their work.
Activities
An important element of the Network’s work is to ensure that the CEDAW committee and other UN organs receive accurate and balanced information on women’s rights in the Netherlands. This is done through the shadow reports. The Dutch CEDAW Network also reports to shadow reporting processes for other human rights conventions. In addition, the Network contributes to the distribution of information and capacity-building on CEDAW by organizing public meeting and lectures. In addition, the Network lobbies the Dutch government in order to keep women’s rights on the political agenda.
National rapporting on CEDAW
Besides the obligatory, regular reporting to CEDAW, the Netherlands has also implemented a unique, internal reporting procedure on CEDAW to the Dutch parliament. Two years before the Netherlands is due to report to CEDAW, the Dutch government reports on the implementation of CEDAW to the Dutch House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer). Through this process, the parliament can monitor the content of the national report to CEDAW, and more importantly, the women’s rights situation in the Netherlands. The Dutch CEDAW Network works to ensure rigorous national reports on women’s right to the parliament and a critical discussion of these reports by the House of Representatives.
