Tanzania project

Aim for human rights has a human rights and business project in Tanzania. In cooperation with local civil society organisations we stimulate companies to respect and protect human rights within their company and broader sphere of influence.

Human rights in Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world where the population lives of less than $1 a day and unemployment is higher than thirty percent. Companies doing business in Tanzania can be faced with ineffective or unclear legislation in the field of human rights. Child labor, discrimination of women, refugees and homosexuals en people with HIV/Aids are severe social problems. Besides, the use and disctribution of land can have a negative impact on indigenous groups or nearby communities. But social-cultural developments can also cause human rights risks for doing business in Tanzania.

The project

The Tanzania project focuses on awareness raising and capacitybuilding of organisations and companies based on the HRCA tools. Aim for human rights achieves this by means of round table meetings, multi-stakeholder conferences and training sessions. In 2008 Aim for human rights initiated a projectgroup of NGOs and branche organisations that are active in the field of human rights and business. Since May 2009, the Legal Human Rights Centre (LHRC) in Dar es Salaam functions as the local secretariat of the project. The LHRC organises local activities like project meetings, but also promotes and advices about the human rights and business tools.
