Human rights impact assessment
Human Rights norms also apply to companies. John Ruggie – special rapporteur of the Secretary General of the United Nations for the issue of human rights and transnational corporations – published his framework in 2008 which outlines the steps a company must take in order to assess its impact on human rights and to avoid human rights violations. There are several practical tools to assist companies in doing a human rights impact assessment. 'Due diligence'
In the process of due diligence, companies ask themselves the following three questions. 1) what is the human rights situation in the country where I operate or want to operate? 2) in what way do my own activities have an impact on human rights in this specific context and 3) in what way am I involved in human rights violations as a consequence of my relations with partners, suppliers, governmental institutions or other actors?
