Human rights and business boardgame
So you thought that discussions about human rights are serious business? Now there is a game to show that it can be serious fun!
The Human rights and business board game, is a business trading game developed by Aim for human rights in cooperation with Strategic Productivity(Pty) Ltd, with financial support from the ASN Bank Foundation. The game offers you more insight into human rights and business while enjoying the competitive game with friends or colleagues.
The game
Players will have to deal with the kind of challenges and dilemmas managers have to face. One needs for instance to acquire sales orders, pay invoices, attract staff, deal with governments, interact with the population and decide how responsible the company will behave towards employees, partnerships and of course, the bank. Discussions amongst players and the facilitator during the game will raise awareness about the risks, challenges and opportunities of human rights issues in the corporate context. Just as important: they make this game fun to play.
Business
This game has been developed to emphasise the role of corporations in promoting and securing human rights in corporate context. The business community has a responsibility to uphold human rights both in the workplace and more broadly within its sphere of influence. As a relatively new and emerging subject, human rights are not often mentioned in business policies and principles. And if they are, the necessary management tools to implement them are hardly available yet. Therefore the Human rights and business programme of Aim for human rights promotes the use of several innovative tools for companies. These can help companies to address certain human rights issues in order to be compliant with international and local law and to maintain its reputation, but also to improve business performance.
Human rights
The challenges a player has to react upon in the games are based on the corporate tools that are being used and promoted by Aim for human rights: the Quick Check of the Human Rights Compliance Assessment, the summaries of the Country Risk Assessments and the CSR Compass (Codex). The normative basis for these tools and the game are, amongst others: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, several United Nations conventions, and conventions by the International Labour Organisation.
