Human rights and business

Worldwide, the interest in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is growing. Companies offer jobs, services and products that improve people’s life and in that sense contribute to development and human rights. However, this requires responsibilities to mitigate negative consequences for society and the environment. Companies must therefore take into account People, Planet and Profit. Customers, investors, governments and employees increasingly expect to do so. Aim for human rights aims to enhance respect for human rights by companies. We do this by making international operating companies aware of their responsibilities for human rights and to advice them on their human rights policy. In South – Africa and Tanzania we train non-governmental organisations to do the same in their own country.

Capacity building for civil society organisations
It is insufficient to stimulate respect for human rights at companies and governments in Europe. Particularly in countries with a high risks to human rights violations, a lot of effort is required to stimulate local companies, in addition to governments, to uphold human rights. Local civil society organisations can play an important role in this process. Aim for human rights operates in a large international network of human rights organisations, but also cooperates with other civil society organisations like unions, women’s organisiations and consumer organisations. We aim to support organisations with knowledge and facilitate mutual cooperation between local parties. Below, the projects in which we invested the last years are presented.
