Towards corporate social responsibility in China

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in China can be a challenging task. The Danish Institute for Human Rights has developed the China Business and Social Sustainability (CBSS) Check as a self-assessment tool designed to help companies identify and comply with the most essential human rights standards in relation to their activities in China. In addition, they published a CSR handbook for Chinese companies.

The Danish Institute for Human Rights has developed the CBSS Check with the aim of increasing Chinese ownership of corporate social responsibility standards. By raising awareness and building capacity, the Check hopes to develop a common language for promoting human rights and business in China. The self-assessment tool also seeks to bridge the aspirations of international human rights commitments on the one hand, and Chinese social, economic, cultural, and political realities on the other hand. The CBSS Check thus aims to demonstrate how international standards can be operationalised in China without loosing their essential core.

'Towards Global Citizenship' is a handbook for Chinese companies, and gives extensive background on the unique CSR context in China.

Both tools are available for free and have been translated into Mandarin Chinese.

An introduction to the Check, the Check itself, and the handbook 'Towards Global Citizenship' can be downloaded here.
