Renewed website supports worldwide online cooperation to promote human rights

Aim for human rights' Human Rights Impact Resource Centre is renewed! As from today, human rights practitioners from all over the world are able to join in for discussions, collaborative work and interaction through the web. New features include online work spaces, discussion groups and RSS feeds.

Human rights impact assessment

The Resource Centre (www.humanrightsimpact.org) brings together actors from all over the world, who share a common interest in promoting human rights through impact assessment methods. These methods help to translate human rights norms into practical and workable objectives, and thus contribute directly to the realisation of human rights.

Impact assessment of women health rights

The first group of practitioners that uses the Resource Centre for ongoing work is currently present in Cape Town, South Africa. There, from May 19 until May 27, Aim for human rights conducts a training on women health rights. The 13 participants of the training come from a variety of countries: e.g. Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Mexico, Zimbabwe and South Africa. They work on such issues as violence against women, female genital mutilation and high mortality of women in labour. To increase the effectiveness of their lobby activities, they analyse the situation of women using a method, based on human rights impact assessment, called HeRWAI. The analysis helps to link what actually happens with what should happen according to the human rights obligations of a country. The training in Cape Town allows them to exchange experiences and learn how to train others to apply the analysis.

Worldwide online cooperation

The Human Rights Impact Resource Centre, developed by Aim for human rights, now offers space for such initiatives as the Women Health Rights training. It allows continued collaboration on distance among the various participants of the training through webbased technologies. As the renewed Human Rights Impact Resource Centre was presented, participants reacted enthusiastic.

“The reason I want to become a HeRWAI trainer is because I know HeRWAI works, I believe in the method. With this Resource Centre work space I can exchange ideas, knowledge and my experiences with all HeRWAI trainers worldwide.” – participant of training

Knowledge centre

The Human Rights Impact Resource Centre has been developed in order to act as a knowledge centre on impact assessment to help fulfill internationally accepted human rights norms. It advocates the need for measuring the impact on human rights of policies from national governments and businesses, as well as programmes in development cooperation. This has become an issue of growing interest to policy makers, international NGOs, grassroots organisations and academics.

Work spaces on various human rights topics

Besides the method on women’s health rights, other topics are presented as well. An example is the Human Rights and Business Centre, where organisations, businesses and others can use online features for permanent contact and exchange as well as work together on specific projects from different locations.
