In Memoriam: Patricio Rice (Argentina)
We just got the news of the sudden death of Patricio Rice, and we find it hard to believe, as we saw him just days ago full of life and of energy. His last weeks have fully been at the service of the struggle for human rights, in particular the ones against Torture and enforced disappearances.
On June 13th Patricio travelled to The Netherlands to spend three days in our office to take charge of the administration of the International Coalition against Enforced Disappearances (ICAED), alter which he flew back to Argentina with a suitcase full of materials for relatives of disappeared persons. One week later he was participating in an encounter on torture in The United States, to land once more in Europe to attend, on our invitation, some reflection workshops about new challenges to the struggle against enforced disappearances. On the evening of the last day of these workshops we find Patricio meeting with relatives of disappeared persons based in Geneva and informing about the campaign.
And in the messages that now come in (from Nepal, South Africa, Italy, Lebanon, Germany, Kashmir, .., from everywhere) one can notice ho many links he forged, and how many people he inspired. I also read that Patricio took advantage of each step on his way back to Argentina to campaign for the ratification of the Convention on Protection from Enforced Disappearances.
I had asked him: “Patricio, crossing the Atlantic twice in Three weeks is that not too much?”. ‘Yes, it’s madness, but there is no other solution”.
This is how we will remember him: tireless on his personal crusade to defend human rights and exchange with other defenders and relatives (he himself preferred the term “survivors”). Patricio became the main linking pin between activists from various continents engaged in the struggle against enforced disappearances. Playing this role, Patricio contributed to most of the activities of the Programme Linking Solidarity from its very beginning, bringing in his knowledge and experience, but also his sense of humour and the generosity of his character.
It is incredible that it was a heart attack that stopped you on your most epic life. Your heart was so big, that in the end it failed on you.
Adiós Patricio. We will continue your struggle, following your example.

Adios, Patricio.
Nos llegó la noticia del fallecimiento de Patricio Rice, y nos cuesta creerla, ya que lo hemos visto tan lleno de vida y de energía en los últimos días. Sus últimas semanas han sido totalmente al servicio de su lucha en defensa de los derechos humanos, en particular contra la tortura y las desapariciones forzadas.
Al 13 de junio Patricio viajó a Holanda a pasar tres días en nuestra oficina a tomarse cargo de la administración de la Coalición Internacional contra las desapariciones forzadas (ICAED), para volar otra vez a Argentina, con su una valija llena de materiales para familiares. La semana siguiente, participó en un encuentro sobre tortura en Nova York, para aterrizar otra vez en Europa para atender, a nuestra invitación, unos talleres de reflexión sobre los nuevos retos en la lucha contra desapariciones forzadas. Ya en la noche del último día de esos talleres, encontramos a Patricio animando la discusión sobre la campaña con familiares de desaparecidos y basados en Ginebra.
Y en los mensajes que me llegan (de Nepal, Italia, Sudáfrica, Alemania, Libano, Kashmir, … de todos los continentes) se nota cuantos lazos ha tejido y canta gente ha inspirado. También se ve que Patricio aprovechó de cada etapa de su viaje de regreso a Argentina para hacer más campaña para la ratificación de la Convención para la Protección contra desapariciones forzadas.
Yo se le pedí: “Patricio, eso de cruzar dos veces el atlántico en tres semanas no es demasiado?”. ‘Si es locura, pero no hay otra solución”.
Así nos lo recordaremos siempre: incansable en su cruzada personal para defender los derechos humanos y intercambiar con otros defensores y familiares (le gustaba mejor el término: “sobrevivientes”). Patricio se convirtió en el principal enlace entre activistas de varios continentes obrando para hacer cesar las desapariciones forzadas. Jugando este papel, Patricio ha apoyado la mayor parte de las actividades del Programa Linking Solidarity desde su inicio, contribuyendo sus conocimientos, su experiencia pera también su sentido del humor y su generosidad de carácter.
Que increíble que fue justamente un ataque cardiaco que paró tu trayectoria tan épica. Tenías tanto corazón, que al final se te falló!
Adiós Patricio. Continuaremos tu lucha, siguiendo tu ejemplo.
