Human rights activist Jestina Mukoko released on bail
Recently we reported on the disappearance of Jestina Mukoko, a well-known human rights activist from Zimbabwe. She - and 16 colleagues of her organisation MDC (Movement for Democratic Change)- were kept in secret detention. On March 3 she and some colleagues were released on bail. Jestina was committed to the hospital.
The disappearance of Jestina Mukoko, famous human rights activist and former television personality, and that of others was subject to extensive news coverage all over the world and led to pressure from national and international NGOs.
Jestina Mukoko claims that she was subjected to torture. In addition, the authorities witheld medical attention during her police custody. These reports provide a disturbing insight into the State’s contempt for human life, dignity, international legislation, national laws and its own court system.
Jestina is released on bail. It is unknown when her case will be presented to a court.
Aim for human rights calls for continued support for these organisations and individuals fighting for democracy and a new era for Zimbabwe.
