Haiti: basic human rights at risk
The huge earthquake on January 13th, the strongest in 200 years, has caused a major humanitarian disaster in Haiti. The capital, Port au Prince (3 million inhabitants), was ruined and the number of casualties is now estimated at many tens of thousands.
Survivors in the capital are left homeless, struggling for food and water, with insufficient medical aid. Nations from all over the world are taking action to help Haiti, in a rarely seen support. However, it will take a long time before this country, the poorest in the Western hemisfere, is healed and rebuild.
Aim for human rights is concerned for the people in Haiti, where many basic human rights are at risk. In addition, we call for special attention to vulnerable groups within the international aid operation.
