Concerns for safety of human rights organisation NSHR in Namibia
Aim for human rights is concerned for the safety of staff of the National Society for Human Rights in Namibia. Following the release of their report on the discovery of mass graves earlier this year, director mr. Phil ya Nangoloh and his staff at NSHR have been threatened and intimidated. Aim for human rights calls upon Namibian authorities to protect them.
In the report 'Namibia: Enforced Disappearances; Discovery of No-Name Gravesites' the NSHR describes the discovery of mysterious mass graves in Northern Namibia and Southern Angola. There are reasons to believe that the bodies belong to civilian casualties of the armed conflict that took place between 1994 en 2003.
These allegations of gross human rights violations need to be investigated. Aim for human rights supports NSHRs call for an independent research by international forensic experts. We call upon the Namibian and Angolan governments to support this investigation.
In addition we call upon the autorities in Namibia to respect the rights of the human rights defenders of NSHR, as they are obligated under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
