Missing: Children in Guatemala
From October 2007 till June 2008, Aim for human rights has campaigned for missing children in Guatemala. After the civil war, thousands of parents were looking for their missing children. The organisation Todos por el Reencuentro helped them with their search and has reunited over 200 families since 1999. Aim for human rights supports this organisation in their struggle for the right to know what happened to disappeared family members.
Result of the campaign
Aim for human rights has collected 7400,- euro and 400 supportive letters for Todos por el Reencuentro. With the money a motorbike and mobile phones have been bought, to facilitate the search for family members in the poorly accessible countryside. The organisation can use the letters of support to strengthen its lobby with the Guatemalayan government, which so far has not been very supportive.
Strengthening capacities
Aim for human rights is helping Todos por el Reencuentro to develop into an efficient and professional organisation. We have provided training workshops on organisational development and human rights treaties. This enables Todos por el Reencuentro to more effectively promote the right to know what has happened to disappeared relatives. As part of this cooperation, Aim for human rights has also financially supported the organisation in 2007 with 10.000,- euro.
