Marie Busck – Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), Denemarken
"It is very encouraging to see that in the 5 years I have worked in the Human Rights and Businesses department of DIHR, companies have become more and more aware that they have a responsibility with regard to human rights. We are now being approached by companies that I previously never would have expected to approach us.”
Marie Busck works at the Human Rights and Business department of DIHR. "Companies gain more and more power in the globalised world. They are active in an increasing number of countries and have power over an increasing number of people. Not least in parts of the world where human rights are afforded weak protection in law and in the prevailing cultural and socio-political systems. In such cases, it is vital that companies don't take advantage of the weak protection of human rights, but do business in a responsible way. Avoiding child labour, poor working conditions and discrimination are a few examples of this."
Human Rights Compliance Assessment
The Danish Institute for Human Rights has cooperated closely with Aim for human rights over the years. Marie: “First of all, Aim for human rights uses and promotes the Human Rights Compliance Assessment (HRCA) and the Country Risk Assessment (CRA) which have been developed by the DIHR. Through the development process of these tools, Aim has provided key expert input. Secondly, DIHR has participated in the South Africa Human Rights & Business Project managed by Aim through the development of a South Africa specific version of the HRCA. The cooperation between Aim and DIHR is characterised by continuous exchange of expertise."
Practical
Marie Busck came to work for DIHR as an intern, while finishing her studies in Sociology of religion. After her academic study she stayed with DIHR as she liked to work on human rights in a practical way.
